Kannur (Cannanore) the land of looms and lores was famous for Handlooms even before India got its Independence. Those days the handloom sector in Kerala depended on other States for its raw material i.e. Yarn. This proved to be a large burden for the profitability of the Sector. Thus the leaders in the field collectively conceived a Spinning Mill in the Co-operative Sector.

The Cannanore Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd, (CCSM) was registered under the Madras Co-operative Societies Act of 1932 on 22nd October 1956. The foundation stone of the Mills was laid at Chovva, Kannur by the Hon. Minister for Industries, Sri. K P Gopalan on 16th Nov 1958. The Plant was later inaugurated by the Hon. Governor Sri. V V Giri on 30th Apr 1964 with an installed capacity of 12000 spindles, it gradually increased and now the Mill is running with 20192 spindle capacity. Now, The Cannanore Co operative Spinning Mills Ltd., is working as a Public sector Undertaking of Govt. of Kerala under the Industries Department since last 50 years.

The Cannanore Co operative Spinning Mills Ltd. is one of the oldest Co-operative Spinning Mills in the state, located at Chovva, 5 kms from Kannur and nearby Kannur South Railway station. The Mill achieved corporate Social Responsibility by providing employment to 400 persons directly as an Industrial Unit and indirectly responsible for the socio-economic changes in and around Kannur District by providing support to the Handloom sector of Kannur District.

In spite of ups and downs in the textile industry of the Country, Cannanore Co-operative Spinning Mills is striving strong, even after a span of fifty years, overcoming the financial crisis and is now ably guided by the active social worker and politician Prof.A.D. MUSTHAFA, Ex.M.L.A. as Chairman and Sri. C.R.Ramesh as Managing Director.
